If you don't like crowded areas, Jiufen is not for you.
If you don't like crowded areas, Jiufen is not for you. The Jiufen old street is so narrow that you can only take some few mini steps at a time. If you were to come here, I'd suggest you to book your stay in Jiufen for the night, come in the late afternoon, perhaps go on the night walking tour, and then enjoy the views and Jiufen Old street in the early morning before all of the tourists come flooding in.

We went to Jiufen in January (winter time).
We went to Jiufen in January (winter time). As malaysians, we immensly enjoyed the milder temperatures and the lack of rain during this time, considering we came form a hot, humid country with torrential rain on a daily basis.
So, our timing for visiting Jiufen was perfect for us. Jiufen can be quite crowded at times but our stay at night made all the difference. less crowd, magical red lights and the night market was amazing. It was famous for the Amei teahouse but i think Jiufen is more than that. To find gems in other things, I'd recommend staying in Jiufen overnight.

The village is absolutely charming, only need one night here. In the evening it gets very busy but the teahouse (Jiufen teahouse) was very quiet. Lots of interesting food to try. Incredible views. Lots of hiking trails nearby. Easy to get a bus from Taipei there and back (and cheap) - you just tap on and tap off with your card.

As I strolled through the winding narrow lanes, surrounded by souvenir shops, traditional snacks, sweet treats, and Taiwanese cuisine restaurants, I found myself immersed in the charm of an old market perched atop the mountain with a breathtaking view of the bay on the north coast.
The bustling market came alive, especially during the late weekend mornings when the narrow lanes echoed with the footsteps of tourists. To savor the experience without the crowd, I recommend arriving early and soaking in the authentic atmosphere.
A must-try activity is settling into a cozy terrace seat, sipping on aromatic oolong tea while gazing out at the panoramic beauty of the bay area. The tranquility of the moment adds a touch of serenity to the vibrant surroundings.
Accessing this hidden gem is surprisingly easy via public transport. Opt for a bus from Ruifang train station or downtown Taipei, Zhongli train station, making the journey convenient and delightful. With just an hour's travel from downtown Taipei, this mountain-top market promises a memorable escape from the bustling city life, offering a perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and scenic beauty.

Jiufen was fantastic.
Jiufen was fantastic. If you come to Taiwan and hear about the old streets and food market, this is the best combo of both worlds on all accounts. Parking is an issue, so I highly recommend you Uber or bus or get dropped off. If you do find parking, it can be expensive, but driving in the area is a little tight, but it is doable. Many hotels in area will make you use that parking and then have to lug your luggage up many flights of stairs. If that’s the case, pack light. But if there’s one thing you do in Taiwan, this is it.

A mountain town, not too far from Taipei.
A mountain town, not too far from Taipei. It's known for the narrow alleyways of its old town, packed with teahouses, street-food shacks and souvenir shops! Safe, friendly and interesting both day and night!
I like owner and room. The owner is so kind helpful and friendly. She gave me a handmade Jiufen old street map. (I guessed she did it, so nice.) And suggested me the travel route.
Here is very close to Jiufen Old Street (far from 7-11 about 20 maters. You can spend your time at the street as much as you can.
The room is tiny but good for me. Anyway the stairs was narrow and doesn't have elevator.
Anyway I like this place and on the top floor you can see Juifen view at night. It's so good.
I love it has a warmth ambience and welcoming feels. Second and third floor area are amazingly beautiful and ZEN! Breakfast is good, the barley porridge and the pickles are perfectly match :) All in all, I had a pleasant stay.
Note. If you take bus or start walking from Jiufen Old Street, it would be lots of stairs, bring backpack would be more convenient, otherwise take taxi and it would drop you to the nearest point of the hotel.
Great location on top of the mountain with great view. Jiufen Old Street is within walking distance and all sightseeing places can be visited by foot. The staff is very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was great too and the breakfast room and terrace also has a great view.
The car park near the basketball field was occupied, but the car park next to the fire department hads a spot. Both are within walking distance to the B&B.
This property is about location. It is just near the entrance to Jiufen Old Street, so you'll be at the center of the action. Of course, the "Tea House" is very accessible from this property. The room is of the right size, the bed and pillows are comfortable. The toilet is one of those Japanese kind, the high-tech one. The reception floor also has a restaurant/coffee shop, so it's very easy to access food :)
The hotel was pretty near to the old street, and easy to reach by bus station. The lady was super nice and happy, she guided us step by step to the hotel. I came pretty early and they allowed me to drop off the luggage before checking time. They have a bar upstairs, so the drink was worth to try ~~
Such a nice place to stay in Jiufen. The view from our room was magnificent. The location was great and walking into the old section of town takes you by temples and interesting things to see. All bath amenities were in the room. Pack light because space is limited in this village.
Great hotel location, Service is top notch
Owner takes care of customers by themselves
Overwhelming stay
If there will be next trip
I will definitely book the same one
Ps.Family room is highly recommended
Walk 2 minutes to bus stop
Walking a bit more 5 minutes to the market
The location might be a little far away from Jiufen Old street but close to many hidden places to explore on the mountain area. Very peaceful and refreshing. The amenities are well prepared so we had a pleasant stay here without any inconvenience.
Literally next to the bus stop. Family Mart shares the same premise. 7/11 a few steps away. Close to everything you want to see in Jiufen. They have a water machine that dispenses hot and cold water in the common area. Room was huge.
Good location, nearby the entrance of Jiufen market/old street. The owners very friendly and helpful. Went there raining and they offered me the shoes dryer. The room is very clean and comfortable to stay.
A cosy homestay in Jiufen that is great for a short stay. The room is simple but well-equipped - you get the amenities that are typically provided in hotels. I thoroughly enjoyed the kite museum tour!
Breakfast was good but the same with no changes from day to day. Location is good as we only need to cross the road and climb up the steps to reach Jiufen main street. Excellent view.
The location of this homestay hotel is very good because the it's just along the Jiufen old street so that we can shop and walk around easily, if tired we can go back and take a rest.
